Federico's story

Federico started attending high school in 2012. At the time, he lived with his parents and his younger brother in Montevideo.

“From 1st to 3rd grade, I did very well. I think I was always average.”

But 3rd grade was what he calls “the peak of his educational life”:

“I needed to have 12 [out of 12] in one more subject to pass the year with an average of 12 and not 11”

In 4th grade, he changed to a school that taught upper secondary education.

“There were new people, it was a bit difficult.”

The following year, in 2016, Federico started 5th grade, where he chose the orientation Biology to pursue Agronomy the following year.

But shortly after, he decided to change classes because he wanted to take the Humanities orientation, instead.

“When I changed orientation from Biology to Humanities, my parents told me, ‘It doesn’t matter, keep pushing! We didn't imagine you in Agronomy, anyways’. The important thing was that I kept studying."

In 6th grade, Federico changed schools again and took the Economics orientation.

“Economics was not an orientation that many people chose, so it was going to be merged with another group from the afternoon. (...). I decided to change schools because I wanted to keep attending high school in the mornings. It was more a question of logistics than a personal decision.”
“It was the best year group wise. Academically, it was the most difficult. It was the first time I failed a subject and had to retake it the following year .”

So the following year, Federico retook Math 1 and by the end of the year, he finished high school.

Today, he is studying Business Administration at university and working at a tech firm.
He’s a first-generation university student in his family.

This is what his educational trajectory looks like.
